Getting to Know Trinidad and Tobago!

Trinidad and Tobago are a pair of islands unified as a country. They are located of the north eastern coast of South America. It was colonized by the Spaniards in 1498 and later the British after the fall of the Spanish rule to Britain in 1797.The island country has a rich history and has many cultural ties to many different European countries and has gained their independence in 1962 becoming the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Tobago is located 20 miles north east of Trinidad and it is the smaller of the two islands. It is roughly 115 sq. miles large and is accessible by boat, ferry, and  plane. It has been stated that the 1st island discovered by Christopher Columbus was Tobago.it was obtained by the British when the French using the Treaty of Paris in 1814.A major export of Tobago during its colonial times was sugar production until a major hurricane wiped out the crop rediverting its efficiency in that market useless. The did begin farming other fruits and  vegetables and have been very profitable off of their crops and large tourist industry.

Trinidad was also the birthplace of Carnival. It is a unique style of music that is largely popular world wide. They also have a very unique instrument native to the island called the Steel drum which has a very recognizable and distinct sound. The food is very distinct to the area as it has food is found only on the island such as the delicious meal of pelau and callaloo which I had all the time as a kid. The area is rich in culture and history but it is largely unknown to many people not with family from the region.
